The College of Science was established in 2002 during a major reorganization of the university. The college includes the science programs in the former colleges of Mines and Earth Resources and Letters and Sciences. The mission of the college is to provide a superior education in the sciences, advance knowledge through cutting edge research and scholarship, and service to the university, state and nation

Chemistry is the central science; the foundation
on which a variety of applied and nonapplied
disciplines build. Chemistry deals with the
composition, structure, and properties of
substances and the changes they undergo. it
is the study of the materials of which the
entire universe is composed.

Hydrology -

to individual student needs
The
University of Idaho Hydrology program
offers a M.S. degree in Idaho Falls.
The doctoral program is listed as a major
of Geology. Two options are available
for master's degree candidates in Hydrology.
The Master of Science (M.S.) degree is
available with a thesis option and a
nonthesis option. The degree program
utilizing the thesis option is recommended
for students on campus and/or students
that plan to pursue a Ph.D. degree. The
nonthesis option is primarily for students
off-campus and students who return to
campus with at least two years of professional
experience in the geological engineering
or a related field. The nonthesis option,
of course, has some advantages for students
remote from the campus. The hydrology
degree is directed toward students interested
in surface or ground water quantity or
quality work. Students take a combination
of courses in the area of hydrology,
civil engineering (soil mechanics), interdisciplinary
studies, environmental science, and agricultural
engineering.

Mathematics - (M.A.T.) see
required courses
The University of Idaho Mathematics
program offers a M.A.T. degree in
Idaho Falls. The need for persons
with quantitative skills is increasing
dramatically as the world grows
more complex. Mathematicians and
statisticians have employment opportunities
in business, industry, government,
and teaching. Training in mathematics,
with its emphasis on problem solving,
analysis, and critical thinking,
is excellent preparation for graduate programs
in engineering, science, business, or law.
In fact, persons planning careers in almost
any field will find their opportunities enhanced
by the study of mathematics and statistics.
The programs are intended to provide students
just such enhancement. It is generally the
case that the person who develops his or her
quantitative skills has increased ability
to attack many of the complex problems of
society. Advances in science, technology,
the social sciences, business, industry, and
government become more and more dependent
on precise analysis and the extraction of
information from large quantities of data.
Environmental problems, for example, require
careful analysis by persons (or teams of persons)
with skills in mathematics, statistics, and
computer science as well as in biology, geology,
physics, and many other fields. The program
in Idaho Falls is delivered primarily by videotape
instruction.
