2. Criticality Safety Professionals Needed
To help ease the severe shortage of Criticality Safety Engineers and Technicians, University of Idaho is offering NE 404 and PTTE 404 Criticality Safety for engineers and technicians. This first offering of a planned 5 course Graduate Certificate is targeted at both engineers and technicians. The class meets on Tuesday nights from 7:00 – 9:40 p.m. The second course in the certificate program will be offered in the Spring Semester 2008.

4. New Seminar for Graduate Students
A new graduate seminar course will be offered this fall. The course,
INTR 501, is a two credit course intended for all graduate students
regardless of major. The course is designed to assist students
through the paperwork maze including, committee selection and
study plans. Other topics will include accessing library services
and your timeline to graduation, as well as more mundane items
such as parking permits and photo ID usage. The start of this
course will be a one-time only group meeting on September 21 from
9a-4p in CHE 203. The remaining contact time in the course will
be completed online after the initial “live” class meeting. The
online components of the course allow flexibility in study time,
choice of topics -- such as identifying research possibilities
and interests, and in assessing and developing personal and academic
strengths. Lunch will be provided for the September 21 meeting.
Take advantage of the opportunity to connect with faculty, staff
and other students by registering for the INTR 501 Graduate Seminar.

5. Undergraduate Advising Hours Expanded
Our undergraduate advisor, Debbie Caudle, is now full-time at University Place. She can be contacted at 208-282-7983, or cauddebb@if.uidaho.edu. All UI undergraduates need to meet with an advisor before registration. Call now for an appointment.
6. Welcome Our New Resident Faculty
The University of Idaho, Idaho Falls Center welcomes two new Nuclear
Engineering Faculty members. Akira Tokuhiro and Supathorn Phongikaroon
join the faculty this fall.
Each brings a unique research interest and experience in teaching.
Supathorn Phongikaroon joins the UI College of Engineering
faculty in Idaho Falls as an Assistant Research Professor of Chemical
Engineering. ‘Supy’ (his nickname) received his Ph.D. (2001) in chemical
engineering and his B.S. (1997) in nuclear engineering from the University
of Maryland. He was a research staff member with the Idaho National
Laboratory (formerly with Argonne National Laboratory) where he applied
his expertise to the development of advanced nuclear fuels and processes
that result in more efficient use of nuclear energy while greatly
reducing waste. He is also a popular instructor with the students;
receiving teaching awards while at the University of Maryland and
high recommendations from graduate students at UI.
Akira Tokuhiro joins the Nuclear Engineering Program of the Department of Mechanical Engineering this August in Idaho Falls as an Associate Research Professor within the College of Engineering at the University of Idaho–Idaho Falls. Most recently, he was an Associate Professor of Mechanical & Nuclear Engineering at Kansas State University and formally an Assistant Professor of Nuclear Engineering at the University of Missouri-Rolla. He brings expertise in reactor thermal hydraulics and nuclear research from the U.S. Department of Energy. Dr. Tokuhiro received his Ph.D. (1991) in nuclear engineering from Purdue University; his MS (1984) in mechanical engineering from the University of Rochester, and his B.S.E. in engineering physics from Purdue. He brings to UI an active research program in energy where he applies his mechanical and nuclear expertise.
7. UP5K Fun Run/Walk
The 3rd Annual University Place 5K Fun Run/Walk hosted by Idaho State University and University of Idaho Student Services will be held on September 22, 2007.
The route will begin and end at University Place, taking runners and
walkers through Freeman Park and onto the beautiful Idaho Falls Greenbelt. Participants
enjoy food, music, prizes, and great company on a perfect sunny (hopefully)
Eastern Idaho Saturday.
Last year's event raised more than $2000. Proceeds were used
to create scholarships for students attending classes at University
Place during the fall 2007 semester.
We are looking forward to a great run that will allow even more
scholarships
to be awarded in 2008. Registration for the event can
be done online at http://up5k.myevent.com/ or in person at the Student
Union Building. Early registration is $15. Race day registration
is $20. All runners and walkers will receive a t-shirt, breakfast
and a chance at prizes donated by local merchants and by UI and ISU.
8. University Place Construction Update
The Tingey Administration Building (TAB) is undergoing much needed
updates to the elevator and main entrance. During the construction
please use the North Entrance.
9. Instructional Computer Designer Joins IT Staff for Distant Learning Support
