Dr. Robert W. Smith has been a faculty member of the Biological and Agricultural Engineering Department of the University of Idaho at Idaho Falls since October of 2001. He is a biogeochemist with 19 years experience contributing to and leading interdisciplinary research and engineering projects focused on the fate and mobility of contaminants in subsurface environments. Dr. Smith holds Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Geosciences from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. Following graduate school, the first three years of Dr. Smith's career were with the mining industry as a research geologist. Prior to joining the University, his research has focused on U.S. Department of Energy's subsurface science issues working at Hanford, WA for the Basalt Waste Isolation Project and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and for the last 12 years at the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL). Dr. Smith is a principal investigator in the Environmental Management Science Program (EMSP) and the Natural and Accelerated Bioremediation Research Program (NABIR). Currently he is exploring the applicability of centrifuge techniques to investigate biogeochemical processes under variably saturated conditions. |
