University of Idaho President's Medallion
The President's Medallion is presented to individuals who have made significant contributions to the cultural, economic,
scientific and/or social advancement of Idaho and its people, and have provided exceptional service to the state or nation
that has influenced the well-being of humankind.
John "Jack" Xavier Combo
Geological Engineer, Lawyer, and Civic Leader
John "Jack" Xavier Combo had a profound impact on the economic and educational advancement of Idaho Falls
and the state of Idaho that will last well beyond his passing on April 3, 2009.
Mr. Combo, an experienced geological engineer, Georgetown Law-educated attorney and World War II
commissioned Navy officer, moved to Idaho Falls in 1962. He served as chief counsel to what is now known as the
Department of Energy. During his time with DOE, he also held the positions of deputy manager and then acting
director of the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory. He was instrumental in acquiring the
land for University Place, moving the technical library from the laboratory to University Place, and helped site
instructors to become credentialed affiliate faculty so that they could teach in university programs in Idaho Falls.
Upon retirement from DOE, Mr. Combo went into private legal practice and continued to volunteer and provide
service to his community and state. He was vice chair of the city's Library Committee that worked to construct
the current library. He coached youth baseball, was founder and president of the Idaho Falls High School Boosters,
and was active in Kiwanis and Rotary Club. For 18 years, he was a member of the Board of Montana Economic
Revitalization and Development, Inc., and served as board chair for several of those years.
Mr. Combo's amiable and dedicated efforts during his 18 years on the Idaho Transportation Board included working
to gain funding for the Sunnyside Bridge, Sunnyside Road expansion and employee safety and training. He served as
chair of the board for many years.
For his commitment to education and service to his community, state and nation, the University of Idaho is proud to
recognize the accomplishments and honor the legacy of Jack Combo.
