Nathan A. Chipman
Outstanding Affiliate Faculty Award

Charles E. Cartmill earned a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Arizona in 1970. He then moved to California where he taught at California State Polytechnic University-Pomona for three years. While at Pomona, he received a Distinguished Young Faculty award from the American Society of Engineering Education and a National Science Foundation Fellowship grant that allowed him to conduct research at the University of California-Berkeley.

Charles began his long relationship with the University of Idaho when he began working at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory, as it was then known, in 1973. He taught courses for the University in Idaho Falls in the evenings. Seeking a new challenge, in 1978 he moved to Moscow to become a full-time faculty member in the University of Idaho’s Mechanical Engineering Department and taught both mechanical engineering and engineering science courses. Educational leadership opportunities brought him back to southeastern Idaho in 1982 and he took a lead role in establishing the engineering program at what was formerly called Ricks College, now Brigham Young University-Idaho. Charles continued to teach engineering courses at the University of Idaho-Idaho Falls for 18 years along with his job with Ricks.

Charles understood the challenges the students who work full-time while going to school. That understanding was appreciated by his students. He says that "I have great respect for such an individual-so few truly know of the sacrifices that they make...nor how tough it is on their family members. Such dedication and effort is to be commended."

In presenting the Nathan A. Chipman Outstanding Affiliate Faculty award to Charles Cartmill, the University of Idaho-Idaho Falls wishes to commend Charles for the dedication and effort that he gave to our students.
