Outstanding Affiliate Faculty Award

LaMar J. Johnson's richa and diverse academic preparation, work experience and professional society service make him uniquely qualified to provide support to graduate students in science and engineering at the University of Idaho. He taught radiation physics courses for University of Idaho in Idaho Falls in teh 1960's. Later, he guided the research of 25 graudate students by serving as major professor and was on 35 other graduate studens' committees.

Dr. Johnson earned both a B.S. and an M.S. in biochemistry from Utah State University in 1959 and 1962, respectively. He also holds a master's degree in biophysics from University of Kansas conferred in 1963 and a Ph.D. in radiation biology from the University of New Mexico which he completed in 1969. Since 1958, he has worked in many different laboratory, managerial and research positions in Idaho Falls and Los Alamos, N.M While at los Alamos he was tasked with uranium, plutonium, and trans-plutonium operations, operational health physics, environmental monitoring and assessment, and waste management programs. He conductedresearch in areas that included fate and effects of technical development activities on natural systems. In Idaho, LaMar continued to advance in his leadership roles while working in environmental technology development and documentation, geosciences and renewable and alternative energy resource development. Among other research that he conducted are topics such as industrial biotechnology and process engineering, nuclear safeguards and security, and systems safety engineering.

Recognizing that service with professional societies is integral to learning, LaMar has been active as a manuscript reviewer, chairman, director, president and board or committee member to groups in the field. His work with the American Board of Health Physics, Idaho Academy of Science, American Academy of Health Physics and the Idaho Section of American Nuclear Society along with his extensive work experience was recognized by the certificate of Appreciation from teh U.S. Department of Enerty's Office of Health and Environmental Research.
